KEVIN RUDD, the Australian Prime Minister and Leader of Australia's Labor Party, congratulated Barack Obama in a short telephone conversation yesterday... Mr Rudd said he had told Mr Obama that Australia would be in Afghanistan "for the long haul". The Obama administration is expected to place a high priority on the war against Islamist insurgents in Afghanistan. Mr Obama has characterised the conflict in Afghanistan as "the war we need to win"
